Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman will head down to the team’s spring training facility in Viera, Fla. to rehab a left abdominal strain once the team concludes its current eight-game road trip, Washington general manager Mike Rizzo said Friday.
Zimmerman, who has played eight games this season, was placed on the 15-day disabled list in April.
“He’ll get into some baseball activities and then some game action,” Rizzo said. “And we’ll have to have some rehabilitation games also.”
After the Nationals conclude their three-game series this weekend in Baltimore, they will head to Milwaukee for a three-game stint and then return to D.C. for an off day Thursday before beginning a six-game home stand.
Rizzo also said outfielder Rick Ankiel, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list May 6 with a sprained right wrist, is rehabbing in Viera right now. Rizzo said Ankiel is working his way up to taking live batting practice and then will take part in a few simulated games in Florida before beginning an assignment with one of the organization’s minor league affiliates.
