Zimmerman sat after he tweaked his back sliding into home plate Sunday with the eventual game-winning run. He said his back felt fine during the game, but it stiffened up on the plane ride home and still felt sore Tuesday afternoon. He thought he could have played, but saw no reason to push it at this point in the season.

Zimmerman sat in a whirlpool and received treatment all afternoon, and he should play Wednesday. “That’s the plan,” he said.

LaRoche left Sunday’s game after 3 ½ innings with stiffness in his back, which he had been feeling for about a week. LaRoche took batting practice Tuesday afternoon and said he could have pinch-hit if needed.

Without their No. 3 and 4 hitters, the Nationals managed five hits off Cliff Lee and a pair of Phillies relievers, suffering their fourth shutout of the season and second in a matter of four games.
