Ryan Zimmerman will played in an extended spring training game for the first time tomorro, his most significant step since undergoing surgery in early May to repair a torn abdominal muscle. Zimmerman still feels “a little discomfort” when he throws, Manager Jim Riggleman said.

The Nationals have not changed their expectation that Zimmerman will return around mid-June. Zimmerman reported to Viera, Fla. more than a week ago, at which point he began light baseball activity. “I think it’s getting a little better every day,” Riggleman said. “He’s progressing.”

Zimmerman has not played since April 9, the Nationals’ eighth game of the season. The Nationals are 19-26 without their best player. Despite having missed all but eight games, Zimmerman still ranks fourth on the team in Wins Above Replacement at 0.6, per FanGraphs.com.
