It started as a way for Manager Jim Riggleman to fiddle with the offense to spark some offense last week. And though it has yet to yield a consistent barrage of runs, the lineup tinkering that includes moving Jayson Werth into the leadoff spot and batting the pitcher eighth continues, including Wednesday.

After Tuesday’s seventh-inning six-run outpouring, Riggleman said he would continue with his newfangled approach until he felt it didn’t work. Rick Ankiel, who started in center on Tuesday but left with a ribcage muscle strain in the second inning, is out of the lineup as expected. Hot-hitting Laynce Nix returns after pinch-hitting duties late Tuesday.

Right-hander Kyle McLellan returns from the disabled list to start for the Cardinals, his first one against the Nationals.
