Jayson Werth will bat leadoff today, and that’s not even the most interesting thing about tonight’s Nationals lineup against the Padres. Roger Bernadina will bat ninth, with pitching John Lannan moving up the eighth spot.

It seems pretty clear Manager Jim Riggleman realizes his leadoff hitters are not cutting it – their collective .267 on-base percentage is the worst in the majors by 12 points. Werth, with his .345 on-base percentage, provides them a better option at leadoff. But by slotting Bernadina ninth, he also gives Werth a more likely chance to drive in runs.

The compelling thing will be how Bernadina reacts. Many players would take offense to hitting ninth. Bernadina has very little ego and a go-with-the-flow attitude, which makes him a good candidate, in regard to his mentality, to hit ninth in a National League lineup.

Here it is, in all its unusual glory:

Nationals

1. Jayson Werth, RF

2. Ian Desmond, SS

3. Danny Espinosa, 2B

4. Michael Morse, 1B

5. Wilson Ramos, C

6. Jerry Hairston, 3B

7. Rick Ankiel, CF

8. John Lannan, SP

9. Roger Bernadina, LF
