Even if you’ve never heard of Capital Baby Planners, this Bethesda-based business represents a growing trend of baby planning services here (DC Baby Planners) and around the country (The Baby Guru).

They aim to help new moms and dads adjust to the myriad changes that accompany the birth of a child. For a fee, a baby planner will do everything from create the baby registry to send out birth announcements and pick out colors for the nursery.

Capital Baby Planners co-founders Sharon Cichy and Meredith Wade said new moms have told them how they yearn to connect with others like them. A mom tribe, if you will.

“We felt like we had so many contacts, if we put it all together, we could build this community for them” said Cichy.

Enter: Capital City Mamas.

Capital City Mamas is a weeklong series of events, starting today, that cover topics such as nutrition, fitness and feature luncheon speakers. Most of the events are free or very low cost and can be accessed through an online signup.

Opportunities include One Hot Mama, a series of free fitness classes and speakers through Equinox Bethesda. There are also more serious topics, such as Tuesday night’s discussion with a social worker on how to keep your marriage happy while shifting from a couple to parents.

“We want to not just be known for the feel-good things. We want to be well-rounded and really try to reach out and do the topics that are are people’s minds,” Cichy said.
