Many of us spend time grappling with how to approach dicey subjects with our kids, issues such as bad behavior, poor grades, peer pressure and drug use. The list goes on and on.

What about talking to them about wrenching periods in our own lives? Virginia father Sean Lanigan had to have an unimaginably difficult talk with his three kids: He had to tell them he was about to be arrested for molesting a student.

“We try to teach them to do the right thing,” Lanigan told Post reporter Tom Jackman, “and I had to tell them that Daddy was going to jail and my name was going to be on the news. It was heartbreaking.”

It didn’t matter that the allegations against the Fairfax teacher and coach would later be determined to be unfounded. He still had to endure what would be torturous for any parent.

Jackman chronicled Lanigan’s story in The Post this weekend. Lanigan himself answered reader questions in an online conversation today.

In my book, his story is necessary reading for every parent.
