Trying not to cry as you say goodbye to a college-bound child

From elsewhere in The Post: As parents prepare to take their freshmen to college, some moms and dads fear a weepy goodbye. The Checkup blogger Jennifer LaRue Huget is one of them. In the weeks leading up to her daughter’s move-in day at a university, she’s cried at a cash register while shopping for dorm furnishings, at a doughnut shop and while reading Joel Achenbach’s blog post about sending his daughter to college.

“I’d really like to avoid being the sobbing mom in the dorm. As this excellent article from two years ago notes, crying in front of your kid’s new friends isn’t exactly helpful,” Huget says.

Parents who have been there: What tips do you have for staying composed while dropping your child off at college? How do you stay in touch with college kids living away from home?
