Carly Zakin and Danielle Weisberg
Ages: Both are 29-years-old

Danielle Weisberg and Carly Zakin launched theSkimm, an e-mail newsletter, three years ago from their living room couch. They’re now a team of 16 with over 1.5 million subscribers, including Reese Witherspoon, Chelsea Handler and Oprah. The two have also tapped into politics — landing interviews with 2016 presidential candidates Hillary Rodham Clinton and Jeb Bush before some mainstream media outlets this election cycle.

The daily blast includes headlines of the top political and cultural stories of the day in language and tone Weisberg and Zakin would use in conversation with their girlfriends. That’s where the idea for theSkimm came from. Former NBC producers, Weisberg and Zakin were constantly asked by friends what was going on in the news. They realized millennials weren’t necessarily engaging with traditional news formats as passionately as Weisberg and Zakin were telling stories.

That passion for storytelling isn’t all they share. Weisberg and Zakin are co-founders, friends and former roommates. Their unique ability to launch and lead a company together initially sparked when they met at a study abroad program in college.

Zakin’s background includes news documentary production, primetime television development and even a brief stint in reality TV. Weisberg loves political news and has covered elections, inaugurations and health care. Both now live in New York and are involved as mentors and fundraisers with Streetwise Partners and the K.I.N.D. Fund.
