Time to put away the p-Op quiz and turn your attention to something less taxing and more fun: fashion. This week’s attention getter is the socks of President George H. W. Bush. Technically, he shouldn’t be featured. It’s not like he busted out some new ankle covers this week. But the 41st president of the United States, who celebrated his 88th birthday on Tuesday, did a sit-down with his granddaughter for the “Today” show that aired Tuesday. Sure, he talked about his presidency. Yet it was the small part focusing on Bush’s socks that earned him this week’s spotlight. When Jenna Hager Bush told him that he and Justin Bieber — who he called “The Bieber” — shared a love of funky chaussettes, he asked, “Is he a sock man?”

The Event: Unveiling of the portrait of President George W. Bush.

The Location: The East Room. The White House

The Evidence: Red, white and blue socks .

The Critique: They say you can learn a lot about a person by the shoes they wear. And I’d add you learn a little more by the socks they slip on with them. And nothing says “I love America” like these socks on a former president sitting in the White House. They are bold. From the intensity of the colors to the width of the colors, they’re like a fireworks display at ground level. They also bespeak a fun-loving man who is comfortable in his own skin.

“Well, I like a colorful sock,” Bush told his granddaughter. More men should.
