“It’s not racist to notice race or point out racism. To say it is is an attempt to silence those who would talk about it,” social commentator Toure’, my MSNBC colleague, reminded me in an e-mail yesterday. The author of “Who’s Afraid of Post-Blackness?” added, “Race is like the weather. We tend to talk about the weather when it’s at an extreme but it’s always present, impacting our days. Race is similar.”
I was reminded of Toure’s words as I went through the contents of my inbox from Friday (the day the case went to the jury) through yesterday. The accusations of racism for expressing a racial concern about the killing of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman were expressed in blunt terms. As was their certitude that Trayvon was “up to no good.”
Below are excerpts from some of the choice e-mails I’ve received from people reacting to what I’ve written or said on television. Their e-mail addresses are not included. No need to subject the poor souls to their own brand of vitriol. Also, their bad grammar and misspellings remain. No need for me to give them a helping hand.

Would you do us all a favor and stop wearing your race on your sleeve. You and many other blacks that have come out in droves in all the networks to render their opinions about the Martin case, are coming across as extremely biased; your opinions tainted black. . . .
Race relations WILL NEVER IMPROVE until the black community cuts the crap by making everything racial….Lose the colored glasses and you’ll be able to see things clearly. Stick to the facts and report them accurately. If one of your guests is making ridiculous statements that are not factual or distorted, have the balls to set them straight and correct their warped, skewed, and biased views. Otherwise, you too will come across as dumb, ignorant, and racially biased moron. . . .

Your racial bias is pathetic. Carrying the gun was legal. Following Martin was legal. After punching Zimmerman in nose, killing him in self defense was legal. All else is BS. Kind of a reverse lynching you have in mind here Jon. Ironic, isn’t it. The black community lynching the hispanic guy. Revenge is sweet, is it? You’ve come a long way, baby. SHAME ON YOU

You sir are a racist. In reading the first paragraph of your racist piece, I concluded that you were black. Sure enough, when I clicked on your particulars, there you were. Only a black would use this case to stoke racial fires even though Zimmerman is Hispanic. You see anti black sentiment behind every affront claimed real or not and when it is black against white, the answer is this is what is expected after years of oppression. Sadly, the Washington Post permits you to write such trash promoting racial unrest. I expect to see you along with the Black Panthers and Al Sharpton egging on demonstrators and riots after Zimmerman is acquitted.

Jonathan, you are gay and proud, but black and hate whitey. Why do you so hate whitey? From your tv appearances and your writings it is sadly so very very evident.

There’s a special place in Hell for race-baiting white-hating hypocrites like you and Al the convicted slanderer Sharpton whose whole reason for being is to promote racial discord. Trayvon Martin = Tawana Brawley and you’re no different than David Duke.

‘Vengeance be unto God”….’vengeance??? Powerful words Mr. Capehart, powerful. How about JUSTICE? or does that not matter to the presumptuous, racists bigots in the press and in the streets who inflamed this case to this level of irrationality. Those who would lynch a man for protecting himself and those like you who can only see race should be ashamed. JUSTICE Mr. Capehart, JUSTICE.

Dear Mr Capehart,
Pardon my crocodile tears over your anguish at the acquittal of George Zimmerman, Mr Capehart. I have never seen a more one sided (and fictional) account of what happened in the Martin-Zimerman tragedy!.. In fact, you have no idea what happened You just spewed out what you wished had occurred so that you could bleed your liberal tears all over the media. . . . How do you know Zimmerman “profiled” Martin?.. From all we know about him, he interacted well and taught black youth in an educational venues. . . As for Martin, here is a person in a hoodie strolling menacingly in the area where Zimmerman confronted him looking for all the world world like the punk he really was. . . .

From over here in Ireland, it appears that the real failure lies with Trayvon’s parents. There seems little doubt, although the Post and others like it hid the truth, that Trayvon was a punk wannabe gangster. He died that death. Nothing you racebaiters can scream should drown that out. A hoodie is a thug uniform as much a hoods and robes represent the Klan.

Mr. Zimmerman perhaps was a wannabe cop. But let’s be honest, Trayvon was not a nice little teenage boy. He was a wannabe thug, a gangsta – dressed like a thug wandering around a neighborhood in the dark, in the rain, in a hoodie and low and behold full of THC. He punched a resident in the face and broke his nose and slammed his head into the concrete. The evidence clearly shows that unless you are blind. Big surprise. Look at the culture Trayvon grew up in. There is your problem. Trayvon’s death was a tragedy, but what the media and your brethren are trying to do to Mr. Zimmerman is as well.
Reading these letters is like walking through a sewer with no shoes. They peddle falsehoods. They make assertions not supported by the facts. They presume Trayvon to be guilty. They believe Trayvon caused his own death. And they don’t consider for a moment that the unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon walking home in the rain while talking to a friend on his cell phone was scared of being followed by a stranger.
