Ignoring science and common sense, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda said over the weekend that he would sign a bill into law that would criminalize being gay. A prison sentence of 14 years awaits those convicted. And those found guilty of “aggravated homosexuality” could find themselves in the clink for life. Sadly, Uganda is not alone in its harsh treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people.
So harsh is the Uganda measure that President Obama released a weekend statement decrying it. One of the lasting legacies of the late South African President Nelson Mandela is the world’s only constitution that specifically protects the rights of its LGBT citizens. Would that the rest of Africa were so forward thinking.
