Cain’s modest fundraising haul doesn’t reflect recent surge

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Herman Cain on Saturday said the public should not read too much into his modest fundraising numbers for the third quarter because they do not reflect the outpouring of contributions and support he has received in just the past two weeks.

Cain, who is completing a two-day campaign swing through Tennessee, raised $2.8 million during the period that ended Sept. 30, significantly less than his top-tier rivals in the Republican presidential race. But the surge of support he has enjoyed since his victory in a Florida straw poll has led the campaign to attract another $2 million since then, he said in an interview.

“Money isn’t what’s driving my momentum, my message is driving my momentum,” Cain said.

The former Godfather’s Pizza chief executive made his remarks at the Southern Hills Country Club here, where he spent the morning at a fundraiser greeting scores of supporters and signing copies of his new book, “This is Herman Cain!” The autographed volumes could be had for $100 each.

Cain has risen to the top of several polls in recent weeks, but has faced questions about the seriousness of his campaign and whether he has the resources to take on frontrunner Mitt Romney, who reported raising $14 million last quarter, and Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who raised $17 million.

Cain’s finance report also showed that he had about $1 million left in the bank on Sept. 30 and that he loaned his campaign $175,000.

Cain responded more extensively to his skeptics on Friday night, in a wide-ranging speech before a crowd of several hundred in the small town of Waverly outside of Nashville. Standing on a stage that more often hosts local beauty pageants than presidential hopefuls, Cain brought the crowd to its feet more than a dozen times with one-liners about President Obama and the Environmental Protection Agency, told personal stories of his childhood in Atlanta that drew eruptions of laughter, and concluded with a stirring rendition of the old spiritual, “He Looked Beyond Our Faults And Saw Our Need.”

He also assured supporters that the campaign is progressing according to plan.

“You hear somebody say, Well, normally campaigns, you know, they do this they do that,” Cain said. “I said, I’m not the typical campaign, because I’m not the typical candidate in terms of how I want to do this.”

He continued: “So when you hear about all of the money that’s being raised by other candidates and this Cain campaign has a measly million dollars in available funds, do not fret my friends. Because message is more powerful than money because of you the people.”
