The firm attributes the projected milestone to the growing popularity of smartphones, which have become so common that smartphone shipments are now outnumbering feature phone shipments in Western Europe.

Smartphones, however, are not the only devices behind the jump in mobile Web use. The research group said that media tablet adoption will rise at such a fast rate that “the number of users accessing the Internet through PCs will first stagnate and then slowly decline.”

The group said that U.S. consumers will make the switch first, followed by Western Europe and Japan.
