One man was killed and four other people were seriously hurt Thursday in a crash that for a time shut down the outer loop of the Capital Beltway in the College Park area.

Two children under age 8 were among those who were seriously hurt in the three-vehicle crash, authorities said. But their injuries, and those of two seriously injured adults, were not believed to be life threatening.

Two vehicles were parked on the left shoulder, fixing a flat tire between Route 1 and New Hampshire Avenue, when aother vehicle crashed into the back of one of the cars about 6 p.m., Maryland State Police said.

Four people were standing outside the parked vehicles and one man was trapped between them, helping to change the tire, when the crash occurred, said Mark Brady, a spokesman for the Prince George’s fire department. That man was the one who died.

The four seriously injured people were taken to local hospitals, Brady said. There was no immediate word on their injuries.

The moving vehicle caught fire after the crash, police said.

Two lanes of the outer loop reopened about an hour after the crash, authorities said.
