UPDATE: The boy was found safe, the Richmond police announced just before 1 a.m. Christmas Day.
He was found in the SUV near a main road about a mile from where the SUV was taken. A Richmond newspaper said he was found about 11:30 p.m. No one else was reported in the vehicle.
An amber alert was issued on Christmas Eve for a 2-year-old boy who authorities said was abducted from Richmond after a double homicide.
The boy was identified as Kaiden Gage Burnside. The amber alert for him was issued by the state police.
The Richmond police said they were looking for Jamal Louis Clemons, 27, in connection with the abduction.
Police said the abduction followed the deaths of a man and woman who were found shot in a house in the Church Hill section of Richmond about a block from the address they gave for Clemons.
Witnesses reported that a male fled the area inside a 2012 white GMC SUV with Virginia plates: XCZ-6757, Richmond police said. They said Kaiden Burnside was in that vehicle.
But police told the Richmond Times-Dispatch newspaper that the child’s presence in the vehicle was apparently unknown when it was driven away.
The boy has blond hair and blue eyes and was last seen wearing a red plaid shirt, a white or cream vest and green corduroy pants, the Richmond police said.
In a news release, the Richmond police said Clemons was wanted on charges of abduction and of robbery with a firearm.
Clemons is black about 5-feet-7 to 5-feet-10 inches with a thin build and full beard, the Richmond police said. They said he was last seen wearing a black hoodie and baggy blue jeans.
