A body was found Tuesday afternoon on top of a truck on Interstate 95 in Fairfax County, authorities said.

The body was found about 3 p.m. on a tractor-trailer near the intersection with the Fairfax County Parkway in the Lorton area of southern Fairfax County, the Virginia State Police said.

Authorities said the truck was stopped in the southbound lanes by state police after receiving a call from a motorist who apparently spotted the body on the vehicle, while driving on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.

The matter remained under investigation Tuesday night. The body had not been identified and there was no indication of how it came to be on top of the truck.

Interstate 95 in Fairfax County is one of the busiest highways in the eastern United States, carrying a heavy volume of both commuter and through traffic.
