Prince George’s County police have located the parents of the young boy who was found wandering around a neighborhood in the Landover area Sunday, authorities said.

The child, thought to be 4 or 5-years-old, was found about 2:30 p.m. in the 2300 block of Vermont Avenue in the Landover area, police said. They said they carried out an extensive search in that neighborhood but could not immediately find any relatives.

Cpl. Evan Baxter, a Prince George’s County police spokesman, said the child’s parents saw their son’s picture on the news and contacted police about 7 a.m. Monday. He said there was “some sort of miscommunication,” and “everybody thought somebody else was watching” the child.

“It doesn’t look to be anything criminal or negligent,” he said.

Earlier Monday, Cpl. Henry Tippett, another police spokesman, said the boy was in the custody of Child Protective Services. Baxter said he did not know if he had been turned back over to his parents yet.

Baxter said the boy lived in the area where he was discovered. He said he did not know exactly how old the boy was.
