Corado’s restaurant fire in Mt. Pleasant contained to first floor (photos)

A fire broke out Wednesdsay morning at Corado’s restaurant in Mt. Pleasant. (Courtesy of Thomas Dooley)

Residents who live in the apartments above the restaurant flocked to the street as five hook-and-ladder trucks from D.C. Fire arrived at 3217 Mt. Pleasant St. NW at approximately 7:45 a.m.

Firefighters broke the first and second story windows with an axe. The fire was contained to the first floor and extinguished.

Tom Dooley, a 28-year-old photographer who lives above the restaurant, said, “I was in the shower and smelled smoke and then I heard someone knocking on my door.” His neighbor called 911 and the trucks arrived minutes later.

One resident lamented, “ I should have had rental insurance.”

D.C. Fire officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
