Fire in Old Town causes power outage, closes Alexandria courthouse

A fire that broke out early Thursday morning near the intersection of King and South Royal streets in Alexandria has damaged Dominion Virginia Power’s equipment and underground cables, prompting the power company to shut off electricity in parts of Old Town.

Customers in the 300, 400 and 500 blocks of King Street and the 100 block of Pitt Street will be without power for most of the day as crews make repairs, officials said.

The Alexandria courthouse and businesses including the Hotel Monaco are closed as a result of the outage. City hall is not affected and remains open.
