Harlem Renaissance Festival delights Prince George’s

The Prince George’s Harlem Renaissance Festival attracted scores Saturday to the Prince George’s Ballroom in Landover.

Dorothy Bailey, chairwoman of the Harlem Remembrance Foundation, and Prince George’s County Council member Andrea C. Harrison (D) opened the festival. Bailey said it was “an opportunity to showcase some of the talent that we have in Prince George’s County. . . .We have to pass it down” or “it will die.”

As Lauryn Kelton, 10, a trumpet player, left the stage, she said, “I like playing the trumpet.” Then she added: “No, I love it — because music frees your mind.”

Awards went to William Welch, Belinda Carter Taylor, Rev. John Jenkins and Mary Ann Williams.
