Lincoln Memorial evacuated due to smoke odor

Visitors to the Lincoln Memorial were evacuated Monday morning after a defective piece of equipment in the basement began smelling of smoke, authorities said.

Oscar Mendez, spokesman for D.C. Fire and EMS, said the odor came from a defective air handler unit that has since been shut off. The building was evacuated around 10:20 a.m.

No injuries were reported.

And then the fire alarm went off at the Lincoln Memorial
