Ballou Senior High School’s Majestic Marching Knights, the University of Maryland’s “Mighty Sound of Maryland” marching band, and a Northern Virginia chapter of Canine Companions for Independence are among the local groups who will be marching in President Obama’s inauguration day parade, organizers said Tuesday.

They will join of a diverse cavalcade from across the nation that includes groups such as the Navaho Nation Band from Window Rock, Arizona, the Lesbian and Gay Band Association from St. Louis, and the Kamehameha Schools Warrior Marching Band from Honolulu.

The Presidential Inaugural Committee said these groups were among the first wave of participants who applied to the Joint Task Force National Capital Region by the Nov. 30 deadline and accepted the organizers’ invitation to participate. Organizers said invitations are still going out and the list of participants – which can be found here -- is not yet final.

The Presidential Inaugural Committee reviewed the applications with help from the Joint Task Force, which included members of several military marching bands. The organizers said more than 2,800 applications came in, or more than twice the number who applied to participate in President Obama’s first inauguration in 2009.

President Obama will take the constitutionally mandated oath of office beginning a second term on Sunday Jan. 20 in a private setting and then participate in a public swearing-in ceremony on Monday Jan. 21.
