A collision on Rockville Pike early Thursday morning left one man dead and the scooter he was driving embedded in the front end of the car that hit him, Montgomery County Police reported.
The driver of the scooter, Roberto Nassar, 30, of Rockville, was traveling northbound on Rockville Pike (Route 355) shortly before 1:30 a.m., police spokesman Captain Paul Starks said. He stopped at a red light at Edmonston Drive then, as the traffic light turned green, he was struck from behind by a car.
The rear of the scooter became lodged in the car, Starks said. Nassar was thrown off, but the car continued to drag the scooter for nearly one mile up Rockville Pike, to Viers Mill Road (Route 28), before the driver was finally stopped by police.
“We don’t know what was going through his mind,” Starks said of the driver of the car.
Nassar was taken to the hospital in critical condition, Stark said. He later died of his injuries.
The driver of the car, 22-year-old Michael Charles Dalton, was not seriously injured in the crash. He listed his address with the District Court as College Park. Police had previously listed his address as Perkasie, Penn.
He is charged with failure to immediately stop at the scene of an accident involving death, failure to immediately return and remain at the scene of an accident involving death, and failure to report the death to police.
Dalton is currently being held at the Montgomery County Detention Center. It is unknown whether he was driving under the influence, Starks said.
Rockville Pike was closed in both directions between Edmonston and Veirs Mill roads for much of the morning commute while police investigated the accident.
