A 2-year old child was rescued Tuesday evening after falling into the water along the Southwest Washington waterfront, authorities said.
The child fell into the Washington Channel near the seafood market on Maine Avenue SW, around 6:30 p.m. authorities said.
The child’s mother dived into the water to save the child, and bystanders helped pull both out , said Pete Piringer, a spokesman for the D.C. fire and emergency services department.
He said the child was taken to a hospital in serious condition, and the mother was also taken, so she could be checked.
An officer with the D.C. harbor patrol said the water could be as deep as 10 feet at the point where the child fell in.
