“Some of the pieces that are hanging and cracked would not sustain high winds,” Weinberg said.

The Capital Weather Gang reports the latest models are shifting Irene’s track eastward, which could lessen the impact on the D.C. area.

Weinberg said engineers and stonemasons are assessing the full extent of the damage, how much it will cost to repair and when the cathedral might reopen. He said some of the repairs will require large cranes .

Meantime, officials are collecting donations for repairs to the cathedral.
