Police identify man shot by officer

The stabbing suspect fatally shot by a police officer Friday in Fairfax County was identified late Friday night.

County police identified him as Joseph Anthony Craft, 49, of the 7000 block of Calamo Street in the Springfield area.

The officer who shot him near Backlick Road in Springfield was not named, but police said he has been a member of the department for 15 years.

A witness said the officer fired after the man came toward him with a knife and refused repeated orders to drop it.

Police said they went to the area after a stabbing was reported there. They said the stabbing victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries described as not life-threatening.

The spot is on the west side of Interstate 95, and about three quarters of a mile west of the Springfield mall. It is about one mile south of the Capital Beltway.
