A 21-year-old man died Tuesday night after an apparent drowning at a pond in northern Prince George’s County, authorities said.

Police on Wednesday identified the man as Kalif Omar Richardson, 21, of District Heights. They said they were working to determine why he went in the pond.

Witnesses reported seeing a teen go into the pond, located near an apartment complex in the 13000 block of Old Stagecoach Road, shortly before 8:45 p.m., but no one saw him resurface.

After an 80-minute search involving firefighters, water rescue teams and a helicopter using infrared equipment and high-powered lights, the man’s body was found at the bottom of the pond, said county fire and rescue spokesman Mark Brady.

The pond, which is surrounded by foliage and low rise apartment houses, is about 500 feet long and 300 feet across. The water depth ranged from about two to four feet, said Brady, and rescue team members walked through the pond searching for the body.

When the man was pulled from the water about 10:20 p.m., he was not breathing and had no pulse, Brady said.

CPR was performed on shore and the man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The apparent drowning remains under investigation.
