Three masked people who approached a car at a stoplight in the Petworth area of the District of Columbia and yelled “trick or treat” were no innocent Halloween revelers, police said.

It was about 7:45 p.m. Saturday when a motorist stopped for a traffic signal at 13th Street and Arkansas Avenue NW, and three people in masks came up to the car, police said.

They yelled “trick or treat,” the motorist rolled down the window, and one of the masked trio grabbed the driver’s shirt, police said. He also tried to open the car door, and according to police, said:

“Get out of the car. Give me your keys.”

The driver instead drove away and called police. The would-be robbers ran.

Police said they were looking for them.
