Two young girls were hit by a vehicle Wednesday evening in Southeast Washington near the border with Prince George’s County, authorities said.

The girls were said to be between the ages of 3 and 6. They were taken to a hospital in serious but non-life threatening condition.

Police and fire officials were called to South Capitol and Atlantic streets and found two juvenile girls conscious and breathing about 7:15 p.m., said Officer Hugh Carew, a police spokesman. The age and condition of the girls could not be immediately learned.

The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene, Carew said.
