Virginia Railway Express officials are bracing their fleet for Hurricane Irene as it heads toward the East Coast.

Officials with the commuter-rail system said they are securing their rail yard and fueling up their fleet for it to run on time Monday. There could, however, still be delays if massive flooding occurs or debris lands on the tracks. Fast moving water can cause “tremendous damage” to railroad tracks, VRE officials said.

VRE Chief Executive Officer Dale Zehner said he will stay in close communication with host railroads CSX and Norfolk Southern. Riders will get updates by 6 p.m. Sunday regarding Monday’s service. Riders should check Train Talk or call 800-RIDE-VRE (743-3873) for service updates.
