Matteo would like to play for a “bigger conference team,” Spartans Coach Matt Griffis said, and after receiving walk-on offers from the Cavaliers and Hokies in the last few weeks opted to step away and re-evaluate his plans.

Also contributing to the decision was the departure of Matteo’s recruiter at Temple, Zach Smith, who left to join the staff at Ohio State.

“He saw that coaches don’t go to Temple to finish their career, it’s a step on the journey,” Griffis said. “I think that’s a concern as a kid. ‘He’s recruiting me, but in few years he could be gone.’”

Maryland Coach Randy Edsall expressed interest in Matteo late last fall, and the Terps coaches stopped by the Ashburn school to pick up tape on Matteo, but no offer has been made.

Matteo’s teammate, All-Met quarterback Connor Jessop, committed to Virginia Tech as a preferred walk-on earlier this week. Matteo is expected to take visits to both schools later this month.
