Dunbar lineman Derwin Gray emerging as top 2013 recruit

At 16 years old, Dunbar junior offensive lineman Derwin Gray is quickly turning into one of the area’s top recruits of the 2013 class. He is 6-foot-5 and 260 pounds. He has the mobility of a tight end but the frame of an offensive tackle.

“He has no fat,” Dunbar Coach Ashaa Cherry said. “He has good footwork and all muscle. And he’s only 16 years old.”

Gray had been drawing serious interest from major college football programs but didn’t receive his first offer until he attended a camp at Rutgers in early June. And then, they began pouring it. “My recruitment didn’t blow up until this summer,” said Gray, who added he is interested in studying journalism in college.

Last year’s NCAA champion, Auburn, has offered. As has Clemson, Michigan State and West Virginia. Gray also has offers from New Mexico, North Carolina, Syracuse and Tennessee State.

Florida, Michigan, Notre Dame and UCLA have followed him closely, Gray said, and may follow suit with offers.
