“He set the bar high for the first kid,” Tommy Doyle said of Matt, a 2009 honorable mention All-Met who also attended Flint Hill.

The 6-foot-6, 215-pound little brother is not doing so bad himself. He recently committed to play at his dream school, the University of Virginia.

The younger Doyle, who throws in the high 80s, was impressed by the Cavaliers' nine consecutive NCAA tournament appearances and said that the philosophies of Virginia pitching coach Karl Kuhn were markedly similar to the way he has been coached in Northern Virginia.

Virginia Tech and Wake Forest also offered Doyle, who was Flint Hill's ace last season as a sophomore.

“With him at this age and with that size and knowing how to pitch, his potential right now is out the roof,”said Flint Hill Coach Tom Verbanic, who also played at Virginia. “I’m glad he’s gotten it out of the way, so his junior and senior year here should be a little easier having that already in the bank.”
