Gar-Field guard Zach Fong commits to Navy

Gar-Field junior guard Zach Fong, a key cog on the team that went 26-2 last season and won the Virginia AAA Northwest Region title, committed Monday morning to play at Navy.

Fong took an unofficial visit to Annapolis on Thursday, got offered while there and pondered the decision over the weekend, Gar-Field Coach Andy Gray said.

“They had been to see him play this year and had been following his progress,” Gray said. “We didn’t expect it this soon. But they felt confident enough, so they made the offer.”

The 5-foot-11 Fong, best known as a long-range shooter, sank 64 three-pointers last season, including eight in the region final win over Osbourn, and averaged 11.5 points per game.

Navy was his lone Division I offer. Fong played at O’Connell his freshman year.

“I think the Patriot League is a great level for him,” said Gray, who in 2001 had another player, David Hooper, commit to Navy. “I think he’s the kind of kid that can juggle basketball and the demands of the service academy.

“He’s bright enough to understand that the education that he’s going to be provided by virtue of playing basketball is going to be fabulous.”
