I-95 Kickoff Classic set for beginning of September

The I-95 Kickoff Classic will be held over three days at Bowie State and Morgan State and will include public and private school teams, headlined by Gilman of Baltimore playing Oscar Smith of Chesapeake, Va., and Dunbar of Washington playing Dunbar of Baltimore.

The event begins Sept. 1 at Bowie State, with Friendship Collegiate and standout defensive lineman Eddie Goldman playing Mount St. Joseph, followed by St. John’s against Calvert Hall.

The I-95 Kickoff Classic returns for a second year with eight games spread over three days. (I-95 Kickoff Classic)

There is a quadruple header on Saturday, including a rematch of last year’s DeMatha-Loyola Blakefield thriller, which be mark the first game for the successor of former Stags coach Bill McGregor. That will be followed by Urbana-Westlake in a meeting of perennial powers from different parts of the state and the battle of the Dunbars.

“They say we’re not a football area,” event organizer Tony Kennedy said. “I beg to differ.”
