British Foreign Secretary William Hague and Hillary Clinton at dinner Monday night. (Carrie Dorean for British Embassy, Washington)

• It was a pretty elite crowd at the very private (no press) dinner U.K. Foreign Secretary William Hague hosted Monday for his departing U.S. counterpart Hillary Clinton at the British ambassador’s residence: John Kerry, Gen. Martin Dempsey, Christine Lagarde, Jack Lew, Leon Panetta, Susan Rice, John McCain and Oscar de la Renta, and Bill and Chelsea, to name a few. Beef tenderloin and roasted scallop on the menu. The cast of “Downton Abbey” sent a special video tribute. And Clinton, we’re told, stayed until nearly 11 p.m. (Tuesday: This item has been updated.)

Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) (Melina Mara/The Washington Post)

• God bless Barbara Mikulski for freshening up the cutesy tradition of lawmaker sports wagers. She and fellow Maryland Sen. Ben Cardin have a Super Bowl bet with California’s Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, with the usual local goodies at stake — sourdough bread and Napa wine if the 49ers lose, crab cakes and Berger cookies if the Ravens lose. . . except that the B’more native is also throwing in a can of hair spray. Get it? Like, as in “Hairspray”? Hey, it’s different.
