• Former presidential candidate Steve Forbes is defending his role in how an elite prep school dealt with a headmaster accused of an inappropriate relationship with a student. The Brooks School, in North Andover, Mass., announced last week it was investigating former head Lawrence W. Becker for that relationship and also for hiring escorts while traveling on school business. The incidents only came to light years after Becker retired; school officials told the Boston Globe they’ve since learned that Forbes — the publishing magnate behind the magazine that bears his family’s name — was informed about the improper relationship while serving as the chairman of the Brooks board but did not alert his fellow board members or authorities. Forbes told the paper that he had conferred with the school’s lawyers and that “appropriate action was taken” at the time.
