Jenna Bush Hager is pregnant — and set to make George and Laura Bush grandparents for the first time. She and husband Henry will welcome their first child in the spring.
“We’re back now with a touching story about holiday traditions,” Matt Lauer began. Co-anchor Savannah Guthrie introduced Hager, “here with some of the ways we celebrate — I feel like we have a bigger story than that! Do you have some news?”
If there was a buzz in the air, thank the British tabloid the Daily Mail, which on Tuesday afternoon published a story online assessing Hager’s thickening midsection and asserting, based on a single unnamed source, that’s she’s pregnant. “Today” reps declined to comment on the story then, presumably waiting for the next morning’s big reveal.
“I’m nervous and so excited to say that Henry and I are pregnant,” Jenna said. “Or I am pregnant.”
Her husband walked onto the set with a huge bouquet of flowers, and then the show’s producers got George and Laura on speakerphone. They’re thrilled, too, as you might expect, and bantered about whether the future grandfather will do diapers, oh, and what should the grandkid call him? “Sir,” he joked.
The couple lived in Baltimore until 2010, when they moved to New York City. Jenna, who taught at charter schools in Maryland and D.C., appears to have left the classroom for a burgeoning media career: the part-time NBC work (including an upcoming holiday special on — what else? — White House Christmases), a new stint as editor-at-large for Southern Living magazine, a lifestyle blog with pal Mia Baxter and volunteer work with UNICEF’s Next Generation campaign. Henry, who has an MBA from the University of Virginia, is now in private equity, working for KKR, the global investment firm founded by Henry Kravis.
The baby, we’re told, is due around April — just in time for the dedication of the Bush Presidential Center in Dallas.
