Aretha Franklin hosted her annual Christmas party for family and friends on Friday at the Detroit Athletic Club. The Queen of Soul, dressed in a teal gown with a silver sequined bodice, joined the Four Tops for “Silent Night,” the final song of their set. Franklin exchanged gifts with loved ones, as Ursula Walker, Buddy Budson, Marion Hayden and Gayelynn McKinney supplied the jazz. Other performers during a meal of filet mignon and salmon included Gwen and Charles Scales and Franklin’s son Eddie Franklin, who sang the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic “Some Enchanted Evening.”

Becoming Ann Richards

Holland Taylor, the 68-year-old star of “Ann,” the one-woman play at the Kennedy Center that’s based on the life of former Texas governor Ann Richards, says the idea of taking Richards’s story to the stage “came to me very suddenly.”

“I was literally driving to work at my television show one day and I had to pull off the highway onto the service road,” the “Two and a Half Men” actress said. “I had the idea it should be a play because of her liveliness and her contact with the audience.”

Taylor, a New Yorker originally from Pennsylvania whose acting career didn’t pick up until her mid-30s, added, “I had a lot of creative feelings about her. If I had been a painter, it would have been a painting. If I had been a composer, it would have been a piece of music. I had to do something with my feelings about this loss.” The actress said she will continue to work on “Two and a Half Men” during breaks in the show’s pre-Broadway run.

Noticeably pregnant Beyoncé and husband Jay-Z made a Christmas appearance at New York club W.I.P. (Work in Progress), People reports. The rapper enjoyed vodka drinks and joined alcohol-free Beyoncé in dancing to tunes spun by Q-Tip. “Everyone seemed to be having a blast,” a source told the magazine.
