This morning I suggested a few ways Mitt Romney might use President Obama’s slimy super PAC ad against him. The campaign is trying this TV ad:

The Romney team thinks it has found an opening to direct the mud splatter back on the president, taking a chunk out of his likability rating and simultaneously inoculating Romney against other attacks (The standard line will be some variation on “How can you buy anything he says?”)

This comes as Politico reports the Democrats’ convention will be used to, you got it, slime Romney. “Advisers to President Barack Obama are scripting a Democratic National Convention featuring several Republicans in a prime-time appeal to independents — and planning a blistering portrayal of Mitt Romney as a heartless aristocrat who ‘would devastate the American middle class,’ Democratic sources tell POLITICO.” No shocker there.

You have to wonder if anyone in the Obama camp has any doubts that the orgy of venom will turn off young voters, depress occasional voters and pump up the Republicans even more. By the way, Gallup’s daily tracking poll has Obama’s unfavorable job rating up to 51 percent and his favorable down to 43 percent. Coincidence? Maybe.
