Bethesda-based Marriott International was featured last night in a fascinating one-hour documentary on CNBC called “Hotel: Behind Closed Doors at Marriott.”

The network got behind-the-scenes access to Marriott’s operations, right down to the 200,000 slices of bacon the hotel giant uses a day.

There’s some great stuff in the program about its legendary former CEO Bill Marriott — the man who built the family business into a global powerhouse — but the segment that really had me sitting up straight was about how the company prices its rooms.

What’s the best night to book a room? Are hotels really sold out when they tell you there are no more rooms? And the program answered a question I’ve always wondered: Can you haggle at the front desk for a better price?
