American Jozy Altidore scores two goals for AZ Alkmaar in Dutch soccer league match

Jozy Altidore scored twice in AZ Alkmaar’s 2-2 Dutch league draw with Twente on Wednesday, continuing his superb scoring form and adding to the impressive goal haul by Americans abroad this season.

Altidore scored in the third and 70th minutes during his 80-minute stint for Alkmaar, which conceded a late equalizer and settled for a first-place tie with Ajax in the Eredivisie standings with less than a month left in the campaign. Ajax visits Heerenveen later Wednesday.

Altidore has scored 17 goals in 47 matches in all competitions. Combined with compatriots Clint Dempsey (Fulham) and Herculez Gomez (Tecos and Santos Laguna in Mexico), the trio has accounted for 57 goals in 117 appearances.

Lionel Messi has recorded 61 goals in 47 games in six competitions for FC Barcelona, but as we all know, he’s an alien.

For the American scoring breakdown.....

Eredivisie: 29 matches, 13 goals

Dutch Cup: 4 matches, 0 goals

UEFA Europa League: 14 matches, 4 goals

Premier League: 33 matches, 16 goals

FA Cup: 2 matches, 3 goals

UEFA Europa League: 7 matches, 3 goals

Mexican league: 24 matches, 12 goals

CONCACAF Champions League: 4 matches, 6 goals

Dempsey and Altidore are certain for a national team call-up ahead of the friendlies and World Cup qualifiers in late May and early June. Gomez’s status, as The Sporting News’ Brian Straus wrote last week, remains a mystery.
