As group play ends, 2012 European Championship qualifying comes into clearer view

A dramatic final day of group play in 2012 European Championship qualifying set the remaining automatic berths and filled the eight slots in next month’s playoffs:

Group A: Germany wins group (Turkey to playoffs)

Group B: Russia (Ireland)

Group C: Italy (Estonia)

Group D: France (Bosnia)

Group E: Netherlands and Sweden (best runner-up is automatic)

Group F: Greece (Croatia)

Group G: England (Montenegro)

Group H: Denmark (Portugal)

Group I: Spain (Czech Republic)

As hosts, Ukraine and Poland are automatic entries.

The playoff draw will take place Thursday in Krakow. Each of the four seeded teams (probably Croatia, Portugal, Czech Republic, Turkey) will face an unseeded side (probably Ireland, Bosnia, Montenegro, Estonia). The matches are set for Nov. 11-12 and Nov. 15.

Notable absences: Belgium, Serbia, Switzerland.
