Four players with Washington connections were named to the U.S. under-23 men’s national team ahead of the Olympic qualifying tournament this month: D.C. United goalkeeper Bill Hamid (Annandale), United midfielder Perry Kitchen, Philadelphia Union midfielder Freddy Adu (Potomac, Md.) and German-based forward Joe Gyau (Silver Spring, Md.).
Coach Caleb Porter’s squad will commence training camp Tuesday in Nashville to prepare for Group A matches against Canada on March 22, Cuba on March 24 and El Salvador on March 26 at LP Field. Two teams will advance to the April 1 semifinals at Livestrong Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan.
Two notable players are absent from the U.S. squad: Hertha Berlin central defender Alfredo Morales and Columbus Crew midfielder Dilly Duka (hamstring injury). Olympic qualifying doesn’t fall on FIFA fixture dates, leaving federations to negotiate player releases with their respective clubs. Morales started in the 2-0 friendly victory over Mexico in Frisco, Tex., two weeks ago.

The USSF has until March 20 to finalize a 20-man roster. Porter’s current group has 19 players. Changes are acceptable anytime over the next eight days. In 2008, Jonathan Spector was named to the final roster but wasn’t released from his club until the semifinals.
Mexico, Honduras, Panama and Trinidad & Tobago are in Group B, based at Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
Universal Sports Network, Telemundo and CONCACAF.com will carry the U.S. group matches. Should the Americans advance, NBC Sports Network would replace Universal for the semifinal. Both semifinal winners will qualify for the Summer Games in London.
