Brazil defeats Ecuador to win Copa America group, settle quarterfinal matchups

With a 4-2 victory over Ecuador in the final match of Copa America’s first round, two-time defending champion Brazil edged out Venezuela on goal difference for the top slot in Group B. Venezuela, usually on the second tier in South American competitions, scored twice in the waning moments to tie Paraguay, 3-3.

Brazil equaled Venezuela’s five points but had a superior goal difference (plus-2 to plus-1). With the second-best portfolio among third-place teams, Paraguay also advanced to the knockout stage and will face Brazil again. (They played to a 2-2 draw last weekend.)
