Chris Pontius’s fractured tibia overshadows Charlie Davies’ hat trick, D.C. United’s 3-0 victory over Chivas USA

A marvelous night for Charlie Davies and D.C. United was spoiled by the gut-wrenching news late Saturday that Chris Pontius, the club’s most consistent attacking player who was enjoying perhaps the finest match of his MLS career, had fractured his right tibia and would almost certainly miss the remainder of the season.

Two minutes after registering his third assist, all on goals by Davies during the 3-0 victory over Chivas USA, Pontius was injured on a sliding collision with David Junior Lopes. The impact could be heard throughout the mostly empty Home Depot Center. Lopes was red-carded.

Pontius was treated for several minutes before being removed on a stretcher. His parents, who live in nearby Yorba Linda and attended the match with other family members and friends, comforted him in the locker room before he was transported to a hospital for X-rays.

Around midnight local time, United announced Pontius had suffered a non-displaced fracture. A timetable for his return hasn’t been set, but with just six weeks left in the regular season, he seems likely to miss the rest of the campaign. More details are expected Sunday.

Pontius, 24, has started all 25 league matches and contributed seven goals and five assists. He recently spent a week with the U.S. national team, his second career call-up.

My match report from United’s crucial victory.

The Pontius injury is at the 5:25 mark of the league’s video package:
