D.C. United beat the MLS transfer window deadline late Friday by acquiring Brazilian Raphael Augusto, a 21-year-old central midfielder. He comes on loan from famed Brazilian club Fluminense.

Augusto, who has under-20 national team experience, has been playing on loan with another club in Brazil’s second division.

Terms were not disclosed. He won’t become eligible until his work visa is approved and United receives his international transfer certificate.

Augusto is the third Brazilian to sign with United this year, joining MLS veterans Maicon Santos and Marcelo Saragosa.

Augusto fills an international roster slot that opened when Santos received permanent residency (green card) this week. United credited Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) with assisting in the process.

The Friday deadline pertained to international transfers and loans. MLS clubs are permitted to sign free agents, make trades and acquire players from the lower divisions before the Sept. 14 roster freeze.
