Veterans Clyde Simms, Santino Quaranta and Marc Burch were among nine players not re-signed by D.C. United, meaning all are eligible for selection in the MLS re-entry drafts next Monday and Dec. 12. The others are Steve Cronin, Brandon Barklage, Devon McTavish, Jed Zayner, Kurt Morsink and Joseph Ngwenya.

Simms has the longest-continuous service with United (seven years) , Quaranta has spent 10 of his 11 MLS seasons in Washington and Burch has been with the club for five years. United could re-sign any of the nine players to smaller salaries, but my sense is that the club plans to move in other directions.

“I definitely believe I’m still a starter in this league and can help out someone,” Simms told me.

The re-entry draft order, players available and procedures will be announced by MLS on Wednesday.

“Decisions like this are never easy, especially with players who have been a big part of the club for several years,” General Manager Dave Kasper said. “These tough decisions provide us with the flexibility to make other roster moves and we do anticipate that we’ll be able to announce additional acquisitions during the next several weeks.”
