After a quiet start to the offseason, D.C. United ended with a flurry, acquiring, in total, seven players who should play significant minutes.

Charlie Davies, Santino Quaranta and Clyde Simms are now in France, India and Foxborough, respectively. Hamdi Salihi (Austria), Emiliano Dudar (Switzerland) and Marcelo Saragosa (Azerbaijan) arrived from faraway leagues, joining Robbie Russell (Real Salt Lake), Maicon Santos (Dallas), Danny Cruz (Houston) and Nick DeLeon (University of Louisville).

Add the return of Branko Boskovic and Chris Pontius from long-term injuries, and United is, on the surface, deeper and more talented than last year. But new faces require renewed bonding and chemistry — Coach Ben Olsen’s greatest challenge in the four-plus weeks leading to the MLS opener against Sporting Kansas City at RFK Stadium.
